ઘણા સમય પછી સાથે ફરવા જવાની અનુકૂળતા ઊભી થઈ. આફ્રિકા જઈએ એમ નક્કી થયું, અને હું planning કરવા બેસી ગયો. દિવસે ઓફિસમાં, અને રાતે internet પર. બે ત્રણ મુદ્દા પકડેલા. પ્રખ્યાત જગ્યાએ જવું નહીં, કારણકે ત્યાં સહેલાણિયો ના ધાડાં આવતા હોય. બીજું ટુર માં તો નથીજ જવું. અમમરી રુચિ પ્રમાણે ફરવું છે. અને ત્રીજું કે લગભગ આખી ટ્રીપ કુદરતના ખોળા માં જ વિતાવવી છે. સૌ પ્રથમ તો કયા દેશ માં જોખમ નથી, અને સ્થાયી સુવિધાઓ સુઘડ હોય. માલાવી માં wildlife ઘણી છે, અને લોકો બહુ જતાં નથી, અને મોટ્ટું સરોવર છે, પણ yellow fever નો પ્રદેશ છે. આજુ બાજુ ના દેશોમાં yellow fever નાબૂદ થયો છે, પણ માલાવી માં નહીં. કોઈ મોટું શહેર જોવું ના હતું, પણ કેપ ટાઊન જઈ ને કેપ ઓફ ગુડ હોપ તો જોવું હતું. રહેવા માટે પણ બને ત્યાં સુધી bed & Breakfast જેવી સુવિધા મેળવવી હતી. આખરે પ્લાન આવો કર્યો. કેપ ટાઊન, પછી નામિબિયામાં સોસુફ્લે, પછી બોત્સવાના માં માઊન ગામથી ઓકાવાંગો અને કસાને થી ચોબે અને પાસે આવેલો વિક્ટોરિયા ધોધ. ત્યાથી દક્ષિણ આફ્રિકા ના પૂર્વી કિનારા પર સેંટ લૂચિયા પાસે આવેલા ઇસીમાંગાલીસો અને hluhluwe (આ ઝૂલૂ ભાષા નો શબ્દ છે, અને તોતડો માણસ hlu "લ્હુ" બોલે તો કેવો અવાજ સંભળાય? એવો ઉચ્ચાર છે) અભ્યારણ્ય છે. આખરે મારો એક IIT નો ગઠિયો જોહાનેસબર્ગ માં વસ્યો છે, એને મળવાનું નક્કી થયું. એના "ફાર્મ" પર એક બે દિવસ જવાનું નક્કી થયું – ૪૦૦ કી.મી. દૂર! Yellow fever ના ટાંચણા લીધા - કેપ તાઊન પહોંચ્યા, ગાડી ભાડે લીધી અને રહેઠાણે પહોંચ્યા - સુરખાબ (flamingo) માટે આ ખાસ જગ્યા ની માહિતી મળેલી – internet પર દક્ષિણ આફ્રિકાના પક્ષી પ્રેમીઓ એ દર્શાવેલી. અમે whale watching માટે હેરમેનસ બંદરે હોડી માં બુકિંગ કરેલું, જે અમારા રહેઠાણ થી 120 કી.મી. દૂર હતું, અને આ Strandfontein ના તળાવો થઈ ને જવાય એમ હતું. Strandfontein તો સુંદર જગ્યા નીવડી. નીતર્યું પાણી, સ્વચ્છ ભૂરા આકાશ ના રંગ નું આબેહૂબ પ્રતિબિંબ, અને સરખાબા ના ટોળાં. જોતાં ધરાઈએ નહીં. તળાવો - જ્યાં સુધી સાચ્ચી whale જોઈ નો'તી ત્યાં સુધી એના કદ અને આકાર નો ખ્યાલ જ નો'તો. પહેલી વાર તો જરા દૂર થી જોઈ, માં અને વાછરડું સાથે, અને પાણી ની સપાટી થી બાહર ડોકિયું કરે, શ્વાસ છોડે, સાથે ફૂવારો થાય અને બીજો શ્વાસ લઈ પાછી ડૂબકી મારે. માણ ૨૦ ક્ષણ દેખાય. Cape ઓફ Good Hope જોવા ગયા. રસ્તો ટેબલ માઉન્ટેન ને ફરતો જાય, એક બાજુ પહાડ, અને બીજીબાજુ ભેખડ અને નીચે દરિયો. અમે પૃથ્વીના દક્ષિણ ભાગમાં વસંત આવે ત્યારે ફરવા નીકળેલા, એટલે બધ્ધેજ ઝાડ અને જાંખરામાં ફૂલો ઉભરાઈને ખીલેલા. જવાનો રસ્તો પશ્ચિમ ઢાળ પર, અને પાછા ફર્યાં તે પૂર્વી કિનારે કિનારે. કેપ પર બે જગ્યા જોવાની - કેપ ટાઊન થી 100 કી.મી. દૂર વેસ્ટ કોસ્ટ અભ્યારણ્ય આવ્યું. દરિયાના પાણી નું જંગાવર સરોવર છે, અને આજુ બાજુ છીછરા પાણી પ્રસરેલા છે, ત્યાં સુરખાબ જોયા. ઊંચ ઝાડ નું જ્નગલ નથી, પણ રેતાળ પરદેશમાં જાંખરા ખૂબ, અને વસંત પૂરબહારમાં ખીલેલી. આફ્રિકાના હરણ – antelope - સાત દિવસ ગાળ્યા કેપ ટાઊન ની આસપાસ અને વિન્ડહૂક (નામિબિયા દેશ ની રાજધાની) જવા નીકળ્યા - વધુ ભાગ-

We had an opportunity to travel after quite a while, and we decided on Africa, and Promptly I got on to the planning. Office during the day, and the internet after dinner. I stuck to 3 basic criteria as I started planning. First, it would be wildlife all the way, second no 'famous' places because they are crowded and costly, and finally no tours! I needed to identify the safe countries, and it came down to the southern part of the continent. I was also looking for reasonable public facilities in terms of communications, transport, accommodations. Malawi was very atrractive from a wildlife perspective, with the huge lake, lower tourist traffic and a great population of wildlife, BUT it is a yellow fever country.I was looking for B&B type of accommodations or the early airbnb hosts. Cape Town was in, because i certainly wanted to visit the Cape of Good Hope. Then came Sosuvlei in Namibia, and Okavango Delta from Maun in Botswana followed by Chobe from Kasane. Victoria falls is close by from Kasane, and St. lucia on the eastern shores of South Africa for hluhluwe and Isimangaliso wildlife reserves. I had a good friend from my IIT days settled in Johanesburg, and a visit to his “farm” – which was 400 Km away! We got our yellow fever shots irrespective, along with a few other africa shots (can’t remember all, but we started almost 3 months before travel!). All airlines, cars, B&B’s and hotels booked before our flight. The only thing open were the two safari’s – Okavango and Chobe. I wanted to do it after arrival, because I saw only huge prices and white hunter safaris. Anju would drive – since I don’t! – and her criteria was not more than 250 Kms a day! I felt doing so in SA would be OK – left hand drive and all that! Cape Town, car pick up, and off to our B&B on the slopes below table mountain, in a residential suburb. Turn around at the gate, and one found Table mountain’s profile looming over us. The lady of the house suggested we check out Table mountain first, because there are windy days that time of the year – autumn – and the cable car shuts down. That evening we visited the newly developed tourist area in the port, and were surprised to see an Indian Navy ship at anchor! Table Mountain cable car was indeed closed the next day due to winds! We started with the botanical gardens – which were just superb, the west coast wild life reserve for flamingo’s, Lions Head, the Cape, wine tour at the Spires vinyard (also a host lady suggestion), table mountain and whale watching at Hermanus. We had discovered that there was a lovely site for flamingo’s, and it was the Stradfontein sewerage area. One does not realise the true nature of a whale till we actually see one in its natural environment. We saw a mother and calf from a distance, going out and in to the water, blow holes sprays, and a 20 second window at best. A few minutes later, one of the female southern humpbacks swam under our catamaran, about 20 feet below the surface. The transperancy of the water was very high, and for a few moments, we saw the tail on port and head on the starboard side! And in time that it took me to rush from one railing to the other, it breached! and what an impact its size made on us – a collective OH My God for the 80 passengers on the boat! Later we saw mothers training their calves to breach, tail slap and flip. My finger was stuck to the camera’s shooting button! Cape of Good Hope – We drove to the West Coast National park– about a 100 Km along the atlantic coast north. Not many trees, scrubland, but great blooms of wild flowers. A few flamingoes, some antelopes: kudu and others, and a large field (owned by the military – so could not go near) full of gemsboks. That entire field was full of yellow and pink wild flowers. A few more Km from the view point, we had the roaring Altantic crashing on the rocks of the beach. Seven days around Cape town, and off we went to Windhoek, Namibia for Sosuflei. Continued in 2/2 |
એ પણ ટેબલ મઊન્ટન ના બેજા ઢાળ પર છે, અને ઘણો ફળેલો ફાળેલો બગીચો છે. પછી 7 દિવસમાં સુરખાબ જોવા strandfontein મલીન:સારણ (sewage treatment) વિસતાર, whales – southern humpbacks-
થોડી વારે અમારી બોટ ની નીચેથી નીકળી, આશરે ૨૦ ફૂટ નીચે પાણીમાં, પણ પાણી નિત્ર્યુ કે સાફ દેખાય. બે હગાડી તો અમમેરી બોટ ની એક બાજુ મોઢું દેખાય, બીજી બાજુ પૂછડી! એટલી લાંબી! અને પાર નીકળી દર્શન દીધા! આહા હા શું જંગાવર પ્રાણી! દંગ જ રહી ગયા અમે બંને! પછી તો એના વાછરડાને કુદતા અને પૂછડી પછાડતા શીખવતી હોય એમ હોડી ની થોડે દૂર ગેલ કરતી જોઈ. કેમેરા ની ચાંપ પરથી આંગળી ઉઠી જ નહીં!
પણ રમતિયાળ અને સુંદર લાગે. લોકો થી ગભરાતા નો'તા, જોકે wildlife વાળા રક્ષકો એ લોકો પાસે ના જઈ શકે એવી વ્યવસ્થા કરેલી. પણ આ તોફાનીઓ, વરસાદ ના પાણી ની નાળી માં થી ગામ ના રસ્તા પર નીકળી આવતા.
જોયા, અને એક જગ્યાએ જંગાવર મેદાન હતું તેમાં જેમ્સબોક નામના હરણ ચરતા હતા , અને આખું મેદાન પીળા અને ગુલાબી ફૂલો થી ચિકાર હતું. પાસે ના જવાયું કારણકે એ વિસ્તાર લશ્કરીય તાબા માં હતો. સામે આ રંગીન મેદાન, અને પીઠે ઘુઘવાતો એટલાન્ટીક મહાસાગર!
Huge ponds of semi processed water were great for the flamingo’s. We had a schedule from Hermanus for whale watching, and we thought we could squeeze in the flamingos because the Strandfontein area appeared to be “on the way”. But the flamingo’s were just superb, and the Strandfontein area was unique. At one point, we stopped the car on one of the embankments, and got down, and started walking along the embankment. There was a truck driver far away near one the sewage processing buildings, who saw us, and started yelling and waving. So, we stopped, understood his hand signals, got into the car, and drove up to him. He told us that we were walking towards the boundry of one of the settlements, and that was dangerous. Flamingo’s took more time than we thought, so we managed to get our whale watching ride rescheduled, reached Hermanus – late for our original ride – had lunch in the quaint very European looking town, and boarded the catamaran for watching the southern humpback.
the labelled shore on the Atlantic side of Table Mountain ridge – is below the Cape Point where the light house has been built, and still in operation. we took the funicular to the Light House, but we could hear the waves breaking against the rocks 285 feet below us. The road to the Cape skirts the Table mountain ridge near the sea. Since we were travelling during the southern hemisphere spring, we saw beautiful flowers flooding the environment in trees shrubs and grass. The western part is less travelled, and winds around the cliffs, so we drove slowly, enjoying the bounty of nature all around us, with the roaring atlantic just a few feet away. We returned via the “normal” route, and stopped at Boulder Bay to see teh African or Jackass penguins. Smaller that others, a braying call, but playful, cute and a bit fearless of people – could be found walking on to the road, through rain drains!
